Computers have become an integral part of our daily lives. The lives we lead today are simply unimaginable without computers. While some of us use computers for the purpose of leisure, there are many whose jobs are dependent on the use of computers on a daily basis. Numerous studies have revealed that between 50 to 90 percent of computer users suffer from eyestrain and numerous other annoying visual problems.
In order to ensure that your eyes are safe and healthy, follow the tips given below.
1. GET YOUR EYES CHECKED
It is important to have comprehensive eye exams by an ophthalmologist on a regular basis. Not only will this ensure timely diagnosis of any hidden eye conditions, but it will also go a long way in keeping your eyes healthy in the long run.
2. USE SUFFICIENT LIGHTING
Eyestrain often results when people force their eyes to focus on tasks in poor lighting conditions. It is absolutely important that you have proper lighting wherever you are working to prevent the eyes from squinting in order to be able to see things clearly.
3. REDUCE GLARE
Glare is when light reflects off smooth objects and causes inconvenience in your vision. Make sure you position your computer in a way that prevents the light from outside or any other light sources from shining directly onto the computer screen. Glare can cause headaches and you should take as many measures as you can to avoid it.
4. CHANGE YOUR MONITOR
If you are still using a CRT, then you should get it changed with an LCD right away! CRT screens are known to cause eyestrain. LCD screens, like those found on laptop screens, are much easier on the eyes and have no problems with screen flicker.
5. ADJUST THE DISPLAY SETTINGS
Properly adjusting the display settings of your monitor can really help to reduce and even eliminate eyestrain, especially if you work for long hours on your computer. The settings you should adjust include:

* Color Temperature
6. BLINK MORE OFTEN
Blinking is the eye’s way of keeping itself clean and fresh. When people are busy working on the computer, they blink much less than they do normally. This is why it’s important that you blink more to avoid fatigue and eyestrain.
7. EXERCISE YOUR EYES
Daily use of computer can significantly tire the eyes and may lead to consistent eyestrain and headaches. This is why you should exercise your eyes in a way recommended by your eye doctor. For example, the 20-20-20 rule is a great way to reduce stress. After using the computer for 20 minutes, gaze at any object that is 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. Do this for at least a few seconds before getting back to work.
8. BREAKS ARE IMPORTANT
Besides causing eyestrain, working for long periods without a break can also cause shoulder pain and headaches. Make sure you take regular breaks, typically every 30 minutes or so. The breaks don’t have to be too long – 5 minutes after every 30 minutes would be enough!
