surely linux is gaining ground. for last 1 year i have been using linux. Great thing about this is u have so many varieties of linus OS, almost all of them are free. I have tried RedHat, OpenSUSE, Fedora, CentOS and I have enjoyed them all. You dont need any anti virus. But u will not have ur yahoo messengers,, web chats on linux

I dumped Windows 2 1/2 years ago. What a relief. No more Blue Screens of Death - everything just works. And that's supposed to be Apple's line, but I've found that with Linux it's true too.

I'd recommend trying out more than just Ubuntu (not that there's anything wrong with it), there's some really neat stuff available now with alternate desktops (Moon OS, Dream Linux, XUbuntu, etc).

I switched to Linux full time in spring and I have never looked back. I started with Mandriva and I am now using Mint Gloria. I have since installed it on my partners old Toshiba and my 6 year old daughter is comfortable with it. I would definitely recommend Linux to anyone who is fed up of Windows and it's security issues.

It is a nice thought, but I still get the "deer in the headlights" look when I mention Linux. Yes, I agree that computer savvy people are becoming more aware, because they read on-line and generally want to expand their knowledge. But, for the vast majority of your Windows users, they have no clue what Linux is and don't want to have a clue. However, it is most gratifying when you manage to actually convert someone and they like it and the support calls typically drop to very few or none at all.

Yes, Linux is gaining ground, slowly but surely. I just installed Ubuntu on a Windows machine last weekend, my 6th installation on friends and neighbours machines. It was for an older lady who knows basically nothing about computer. She was on Windows ME, she didn't like it, she didn't like the fact that she had to protect her machine with antivirus and antispyware programs. I told her about Linux, showed her my Ubuntu installation on my machine (we live in the same building). She liked it, but thought at first that she'd have to buy it. I told her it was free, that I had the discs here and could install it on her machine. She was hesitant and guess what changed her mind. My 9 year old daughter, who's got Ubuntu on her own computer and showed the lady what she could do with it. That decided her. She said: "If a 9 year old can run Ubuntu, so can I." So last Saturday I spent a few hours at her place installing Ubuntu. I went back to her place this morning to check things out and everything runs smooth.
