Piracy is Microsoft's #1 ally. In Spain (not 3rd world... yet, but we are trying hard to get a bit closer now) people almost believes Windows & Office are "for free" (=gratis).

Enforcing anything into people (as in China) is ALWAYS A BAD IDEA!

Governments don't care about taxpayer's pockets, they just care about their next re-election. If we want them to save our money we have to make them see they'll be 'out of office' as soon as they rise our taxes and/or waste our money.

Most of the Windows OS' used in the 3rd world countries are pirated. So out of 90% of the market that Microsoft controls 50% of is not really in its control.

Plus China is enforcing its own Linux (Red Flag) Linux on its people. That would take another chunk out. Security interesting in a lot of countries are pushing the governments to its own Linux distro.

I constantly read how many percent M$ has, then how many Apple has... come on, people! Is M$ the biggest problem? Why not sit down realxed and concentrate efforts on something more meaningful? I mean, is M$ so interesting? What will happen if you pay less attention to them?

Everyone is free to use whatever they want. And it should be so, no matter what the reasons are. If people want to use Linux, they will use it - some people are simply not compatible with anything Unix-based.

Furthermore, do we Linux users need so much new community members? Why not try to force things? There are plenty of means to learn about Linux, even without promoting it and spamming in the Net, attacking different companies.

I have also told many young people about Linux, but very few have been interested. You won't make the world use the better platform, nor will you make everyone convert to one particular religion. Things will come to their place without needless effort. There are more serious problems in the community, one recent I can think of is here (for example) http://polishlinux.org/gnu/the-right-to-be-free/ so we'd all be better of working on some more important issues. I cut and give CDs to all my friends who want to try Linux. Best is create awareness in Schools and make them use Linux. In my company I have changed my colleagues to use Linux and they are really happy with it.

In the current economic situation I don't know why many public institutions do not switch to Gnu/Linux, like the French Gendarmerie has done. It's free, it's better serving the people, because from their pockets come the money for public acquisitions and nonetheless people in these institutions have basic computing needs (office suite, email). Gnu/Linux on the desktop has known massive improvement in our decade and I think it is a matter of time before many schools will adopt it too. Perhaps people need to watch the Discovery series "The true story of the Internet" just to catch a glimpse of Microsoft's true nature :)

We shouldn't be so concern about market share as we should about Linux SW quality.

Netbooks have been a good opportunity for Linux to jump into the desktop market, or some part of it when MS released that crap called Vista (Windows Me 2.0?).

But instead of that, Linux missed the train with poor a crippled Linux distros (Xandros, Limpus, etc instead of Ubuntu/Fedora) and POOR graphics performance, especially 3D. Example: They bought me an eee 901 on late 2008, I switched to Ubuntu after a few weeks and now I wait for Intel/Xorg to deliver proper graphics drivers, at least with a similar performance to the ones in Windows XP... maybe I will have that late 2009 or early 2010...

Windows has a lot of INERTIA in their favour, they don't need Linux to help them with software performance regressions of bad distro choice.

The numbers are even more depressing. According to Apple' s own figures, they ship only 3% of the computers world wide. Only in wealthier nations does apple approach double digit market share. So MS actually more likely has about 96% of the worlds desktop market.
