Microsoft announced that it is buying Skype for $8.5 billion dollars. That is a lot of money for a VOIP service that is not very profitable. Skype has 663 million registered users and around 100 million use it on a regular basis. However, most people use only the free skype to skype calling and very few pay for calling landlines and cellphones. The thing that worries me the most is that Microsoft will not want to continue Skype development for Linux or even Mac OS. They will try to use Skype's popularity to boost their Windows mobile platform. The future of Skype on Linux looks very bleak when you take into consideration that Microsoft will take control of its development. The company might still keep some development for Mac OS and Linux but definitely not make it their priority. The purchase of Skype by Microsoft is a bad day for Linux users. It is definitely time to look for alternatives to Skype and its services.
